Halloween Sayings

Halloween Sayings to Spice Up Your Halloween Celebration

By , About.com Guide

There are many versions of the origin and history of Halloween. The most accepted version is that Halloween has its roots in Celtic history. Christians celebrated 'All Saints Day' on November 1, a festival to honor Christian saints and convert pagans to Christianity. October 31 was observed as 'All Hallows Eve', and thus Halloween derived its name.

On Halloween night, people dress up in unique disguises to shock friends and have a good time. The tradition of wearing costumes comes from pagan rituals of the Celts of pre-medieval Europe.

During Halloween, streets across America wear a different look. Houses are decorated with Jack-o-lanterns, monster footprints, and spooky props. Children walk around the neighborhood in crazy costumes, trick-or-treating and collecting candies from neighbors. Many families host themed-parties on Halloween.

Do not be surprised if you hear eerie sounds, or see strange shadows, on Halloween. Read these Halloween sayings and feel the thrill of Halloween.

Those seemingly interminable dark walks between houses, long before street-lit safety became an issue, were more adrenalizing than the mountains of candy filling the sack. Sadly Halloween, with our good-natured attempts to protect the little ones, from the increasingly dangerous traffic and increasingly sick adults, has become an utter bore.

  • Washington Irving
What fearful shapes and shadows beset his path, amidst the dim and ghastly glare of a snowy night! With what wistful look did he eye every trembling ray of light streaming across the waste fields from some distant window! How often was he appalled by some shrub covered with snow, which, like a sheeted specter, beset his very path! How often did he shrink with curdling awe at the sound of his own steps on the frosty crust beneath his feet; and dread to look over his shoulder, lest he should behold some uncouth being tramping close behind him! and how often was he thrown into complete dismay by some rushing blast, howling among the trees, in the idea that it was the Galloping Hessian on one of his nightly scouring!

  • Eddie Kaye Thomas
Being born on Halloween, there's always a party. It's a convenient birthday because you don't really have to organize a party.

  • Sir Walter Scott
A thousand fearful images and dire suggestions glance along the mind when it is moody and discontented with itself. Command them to stand and show themselves, and you presently assert the power of reason over imagination.

  • Richard Brautigan, The Pill Versus the Springhill Mine Disaster
I saw thousands of pumpkins last night
Come floating in on the tide,
Bumping up against the rocks and
    Rolling up on the beaches;
It must be Halloween in the sea

  • Kim Elizabeth
Nothing beats a haunted moonlit night on All Hallows Eve... And on this fatal night, at this witching time, the starless sky laments black and unmoving. The somber hues of an ominous, dark forest are suddenly illuminated under the emerging face of the full moon.

Auld Daddy Darkness creeps frae his hole,
Black as a blackamoor, blin' as a mole....
