Elizabeth Barrett Browning: A Women of Substance

By Simran Khurana, About.com

Elizabeth Barrett Browning, a Victorian poet, was one of the pioneers of feminist thought. She also fought for the abolition of slavery and the Italian national cause. Her poem, The Cry of the Children, makes a strong appeal for child labor reforms. Besides being socially involved, she also found opportunity to find place for romance. Her glamorous liaison with poet Robert Browning inspired the Sonnets From the Portuguese, which is considered amongst her best-known works.
