In the ceremony, the President of the United States "pardons" a turkey, and saves it from its destiny of becoming roast meat. The light-hearted ritual was formalized in 1989 during the office of President George H. W. Bush. Successive presidents have granted presidential pardons to many a turkey, and these lucky birds now enjoy a life of comfort in a farm for the rest of their life.
Here are some beautiful Thanksgiving quotes for friends and family.
- Johnny Carson
A two-pound turkey and a fifty-pound cranberry—that's Thanksgiving dinner at Three Mile Island.
- Sally Brown
Anyway, why should I give thanks on Thanksgiving? What have I got to be thankful for? All it does is make more work for us at school.
- Jessica Simpson
For Thanksgiving we have to make a Tofurkey! It doesn’t sound right! It’s gonna be jiggly and weird.
- Roseanne Barr
Here I am 5 o'clock in the morning stuffing bread crumbs up a dead bird's butt.
- Psalms 30.12
To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee forever.
- Erma Bombeck
What we're really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving?
- Mark Twain
Thanksgiving Day, a function which originated in New England two or three centuries ago when those people recognized that they really had something to be thankful for -- annually, not oftener -- if they had succeeded in exterminating their neighbors, the Indians, during the previous twelve months instead of getting exterminated by their neighbors, the Indians. Thanksgiving Day became a habit, for the reason that in the course of time, as the years drifted on, it was perceived that the exterminating had ceased to be mutual and was all on the white man's side, consequently on the Lord's side; hence it was proper to thank the Lord for it and extend the usual annual compliments.
- Robert Herrick
Lord, 'tis Thy plenty-dropping hand
That soils my land,
And giv'st me for my bushel sowne
Twice ten for one.
All this, and better, Thou dost send
Me, to this end,
That I should render, for my part,
A thankful heart.
- Alexander Pope
Our rural ancestors, with little blest,
Patient of labour when the end was rest,
Indulged the day that housed their annual grain,
With feasts, and off'rings, and a thankful strain.
- Henry Ward Beecher
Pride slays thanksgiving, but an humble mind is the soil out of which thanks naturally grow. A proud man is seldom a grateful man, for he never thinks he gets as much as he deserves.
- Basil Carpenter
Thank God every day when you get up that you have something to do that day which must be done whether you like it or not. Being forced to work and forced to do your best will breed in you temperance and self-control, diligence and strength of will, cheerfulness and content, and a hundred virtues, which the idle will never know.
- Robert Flatt
To hear someone say 'Happy Turkey Day' makes me sad because they have nothing to be thankful for and no one to whom to be thankful.
