I Know Myself -- Do You?: Quotes That Help You to Rediscover Yourself

By

Childhood Influences Our Opinion About Ourselves
In kindergarten, the teacher asks her students to write a small essay on the topic, “Myself.” Through this exercise, young minds begin to introspect. As life evolves, kids mold their personalities based on the influences they are exposed to. As young kids grow into adults, many ideologies and values get ingrained in their belief system, and shape their identity into the people they choose to become. Thus, some kids may grow up to become religious, others self-righteous and carefree, and still others optimistic, or jolly people.

Self-Awareness Is Not a Display of Arrogance
There is a difference between people who are self-obsessed and those that are self-aware. Being able to talk incessantly about oneself may or may not indicate heightened self-awareness. A famous Oscar Wilde quote goes, "I am the only person in the world I should like to know thoroughly." Does this quote reek of arrogance? Look beyond the slick humor and you will find Wilde indicating that he is on the path of self-discovery.

To be able to see the wood from the trees, you need to develop the ability to get a detached perspective of yourself. See yourself for what you are, rather than what you want to be seen as. Get an unbiased perspective; make sure to address your weaknesses and drawbacks straight in the face. Be honest and acknowledge your failings, just as you accept your strengths.
Mia Hamm
I've worked too hard and too long to let anything stand in the way of my goals. I will not let my teammates down and I will not let myself down.

Ray Bradbury
I spent three days a week for 10 years educating myself in the public library, and it's better than college. People should educate themselves -- you can get a complete education for no money. At the end of 10 years, I had read every book in the library and I'd written a thousand stories.

Frederick Douglass
I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence.

Kurt Vonnegut
Laughter and tears are both responses to frustration and exhaustion. I myself prefer to laugh, since there is less cleaning up to do afterward.
Know the "Me" in "Myself"
Enrich your knowledge by exposing yourself to new environments and experiences. To get to know yourself better, view the world in all its grime and splendor. Don’t shy away from baring your soul, breaking your codes, and shaking your beliefs. Had Beethoven stopped composing when he began to lose his hearing, the world of music would have been poorer.

Get Away From the Daily Grind
Modern life has robbed us of little pleasures like packing our bags and sailing into the sunset. There are bills to be paid, children to be raised, and careers to be pursued. Where is the time for self-discovery?

There are many ways to get to rediscover yourself. You do not need to take off to some distant island to improve your self-awareness. You can do that from home.
George Carlin
The reason I talk to myself is that I'm the only one whose answers I accept.

Maya Angelou
My life has been one great big joke, a dance that's walked a song that's spoke, I laugh so hard I almost choke when I think about myself.

Audre Lorde
If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive.

Muhammad Ali
It's lack of faith that makes people afraid of meeting challenges, and I believed in myself.

Rebecca West
I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.
Even Great People Had Small Beginnings
To make a beginning, I have often found comfort and gained insight from famous people. This page on quotes about me highlights the fact that even the greatest achievers of our time are people with dreams and insecurities. Hollywood's eternal poster girl Marilyn Monroe once said, "I have feelings too. I am still human. All I want is to be loved, for myself and for my talent." This quote is a reminder that everybody hurts, even somebody as beautiful as Marilyn Monroe.

Celebrate the Individual in You
Not everybody enjoys being alone. Some enjoy unwinding in front of the television, or lazing on a hammock. Others prefer to surround themselves with friends and family; to be alone is to risk boredom.

The danger is that sometimes, some people get lost in the personalities of others. The "me" goes missing. If you have watched the 1999 romantic comedy Runaway Bride -- you might remember how Maggie Carpenter's (Julia Roberts) preference for egg preparations changes with each new fiancé. Many people are like that, modeling themselves after the people they love and admire, often at the risk of losing their own individuality. Why do people do this? Most often, it is an attempt to fit in and be accepted. It may also be an indication of low self-esteem.
Marilyn Monroe
I have feelings too. I am still human. All I want is to be loved, for myself and for my talent.

Confucius
If I am walking with two other men, each of them will serve as my teacher. I will pick out the good points of the one and imitate them, and the bad points of the other and correct them in myself.

Jim Morrison
I see myself as an intelligent, sensitive human, with the soul of a clown, which forces me to blow it at the most important moments.

Tupac Shakur
I don't see myself being special; I just see myself having more responsibilities than the next man. People look to me to do things for them, to have answers.

Marilyn Monroe
I restore myself when I'm alone.

Albert Einstein
When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than any talent for abstract, positive thinking.
Self-Esteem Is the First Step to Success
Imitating others may not work out in the long run. You would be better off building your self-esteem and projecting your own personality. I often turn to self-esteem quotes for an instant psychological pick-me-up. The best quotes can encourage you to mend your attitude, and change your perspective. One of my favorite quotes is by Maxwell Maltz, "Low self-esteem is like driving through life with your hand brake on."

Seek Inspiration to Regain Self-Esteem
If self-esteem is an issue, you may find strength in inspirational quotes by famous people. American writer Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." A quote like that may rouse even the most diffident among us. Emerson, like many before and after him, was suggesting that we could all achieve greatness. Elsewhere he said, "Every artist was first an amateur." We must all begin somewhere if we wish to achieve success.
Warren Buffett
If anything, taxes for the lower and middle class and maybe even the upper middle class should even probably be cut further. But I think that people at the high end - people like myself - should be paying a lot more in taxes. We have it better than we've ever had it.

Audrey Hepburn
I never think of myself as an icon. What is in other people's minds is not in my mind. I just do my thing.

Every man is said to have his peculiar ambition. Whether it be true or not, I can say for one that I have no other so great as that of being truly esteemed of my fellow men, by rendering myself worthy of their esteem.

Aaliyah
I stay true to myself and my style, and I am always pushing myself to be aware of that and be original.
Embark on a New Adventure
As I mentioned earlier, new experiences help us discover new facets in ourselves. Being bold and willing to risk the known for the unknown is a step in the right direction. If you really want to find out who you are, step away from familiar surroundings and faces, and set out on an adventure. Sit down and write an essay on "Myself." You could be surprised!
Wayne Dyer
When I chased after money, I never had enough. When I got my life on purpose and focused on giving of myself and everything that arrived into my life, then I was prosperous.

Mark Twain
As an example to others, and not that I care for moderation myself, it has always been my rule never to smoke when asleep, and never to refrain from smoking when awake.

Martha Washington

Steve Jobs
For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: 'If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?' And whenever the answer has been 'No' for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Oscar Wilde

Mark Twain

Elbert Hubbard
What others say of me matters little; what I myself say and do matters much.

Bertrand Russell

Henry David Thoreau
I would rather sit on a pumpkin, and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.
